Journalist and DJ DJ Sonia says she has spent the past three years seeking justice over what she describes as harassment, defamation, and online smear campaigns, but claims she has yet to receive a satisfactory resolution.

In a lengthy statement posted on X, DJ Sonia said her case began in July 2023 when she reported the matter to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB), seeking protection and justice against individuals she accuses of repeatedly spreading defamatory statements, false information, and content intended to damage her reputation and turn the public against her.

She said she was summoned several times by investigators to provide statements, but alleged that instead of receiving justice, some of the information she provided during the investigation reached the people she had reported, which she claims allowed the alleged harassment to continue and intensify.

DJ Sonia said she later sought assistance from the Minister of Youth and Arts Development, Abdallah Utumatwishima, after the alleged attacks began affecting not only her professional life but also her family. According to her, she was advised that the matter should be handled by the RIB.

On July 26, 2025, she said she returned to the RIB together with her lawyer, Me Paul Ibambe, where she filed another complaint and submitted additional evidence showing that, according to her, the alleged defamation campaign was continuing and becoming more serious.

In her statement, DJ Sonia claimed that some individuals had accused her of suffering from incurable diseases and had created fake conversations (chats) using her identity before spreading them on social media platforms. She also alleged that some people contacted her, claiming they could stop the attacks if she paid them money.

She further stated that earlier this week, more information allegedly intended to damage her reputation was circulated online. She said this prompted her to seek meetings with the RIB spokesperson and the Director General of the institution, but she was unable to meet them because she was reportedly asked to first request an official appointment.

DJ Sonia said she is now concerned about messages and voice recordings she claims to have received, which she describes as threatening and warning her that she could face harm if she returns to her professional activities.

She ended her statement by questioning what steps she should take in order to obtain justice, adding that she may consider appealing directly to the President of the Republic if her case continues to receive no solution.

As of the time of publication, the institutions mentioned by DJ Sonia, including the RIB and the Ministry of Youth and Arts Development, had not issued any public response regarding the allegations she raised.
